Sometimes Good Kids Do Dumb Things

Childhood should be a time of fun and innocence, of finding out who we are and making good friends, but sometimes (no matter how great you are as a parent), smart kids do dumb things and find themselves in trouble with the law. Often this is for conduct that was undertaken as a youthful prank but it doesn’t matter what your child has been arrested for, any charge can have serious and long-lasting consequences for your child if not handled correctly.

The reality is that any childhood “legal misstep” can negatively impact your child’s college admission, ability to get loans and grants, affect their job prospects or complicate their ability to enlist in the military. It could even mean them going to prison.

I’ve seen parents take the “short, sharp, shock” path of allowing their child to spend a night in jail and I can tell you that this is ALWAYS a mistake. You hope to scare your kid back on the right path, but as a defense attorney I know that the minute your child gets accused of a crime their future is at stake. The clock starts ticking when their fingerprints are taken and runs out when they are detained.

If your child has been accused of a crime you need the help of a skilled lawyer IMMEDIATELY!  You need to hire an attorney who knows how to get the best possible outcome in court. An attorney who understands the legal system and has the experience to mitigate damage. A local attorney who knows the local courts. A lawyer with three decades of experience as a defense attorney

Young people can be accused of any crime but the most common tend to be:

  • Theft: shoplifting, burglary, robbery
  • Underage consumption of alcohol
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Speeding or reckless driving
  • Assault and battery crimes
  • Drug possession
  • Vandalism and graffiti

But I have defended clients for more serious crimes including:

  • Gun possession
  • Sex crimes
  • Prostitution
  • Attempted murder

In my three decades as a defense attorney, I have represented a lot of great kids who made one dumb mistake. Often they were “along for the ride” or didn’t understand that what they were involved in was a serious crime. Fortunately most of these kids were able to turn their lives around, move on, make better friends, complete college and have the life their parents hoped for them.
